Imagine a group of cyclists, meeting at a fixed location in their town, at a fixed time in the evening, on a fixed day of each month, to go for a social bicycle ride where the route is decided at that moment. That's TEAM FIREFLY ! Only street lamps and "flea-powered" bicycle lanterns light our way.
Nobody owns it, nobody runs it (although somebody has to have the will to get it going in any given area.) TEAM FIREFLY exists only so long as people want to keep doing it, and because of the people who enjoy it enough to keep doing it.
TEAM FIREFLY works a bit like Critical Mass...
However, unlike Critical Mass, the aim of TEAM FIREFLY is purely social. The idea is to enjoy the different perspective riding at night brings.
Riding at night is different to riding by day. Most cycling is done in urban environments by day, and as cities are often such dirty, uninviting places, city cycling can also be a chore. TEAM FIREFLY is a concept designed to maximise the unusual joy of seeing the city illuminated - it is a world view where the journey is more important than the destination, and the destination is rememberences of the views experienced while enjoying a sociable drink with your fellow riders.
TEAM FIREFLY is about meeting cyclists who enjoy the cool night air, the less dense traffic and a change of scenery. One ride may be a jaunt up your local cycleway, the next might be a ride up a mountain to watch the next day's sunrise. Whichever it is, it's always a cycling "sweetspot".
So, if you think this looks like a cool idea, why not tell a friend? Send an electronic post card by following this link...
TEAM FIREFLY was born in Hobart, Tasmania (that's the little island off the southeast of Australia.) It has been running there for a few years now, and has been quite successful for a city with a small cycling population.
There have been rumours of other "chapters" being established elsewhere in Australia and around the world. If you are setting up a chapter in your area, let us know here <mailto:teamfirefly@firefly.freeservers.com> and we'll put your chapter's location and start venue on this page.
Of course, the TEAM FIREFLY thing needs a volunteer or two to get it going in an area. It needs people to put up posters, post to mailing lists and news groups and put out media alerts. Do it properly, and you won't have to keep up the work for long, the rides will take off and promote themselves. So have a go, and tell us about it by following the link below.
Well, now you know what TEAM FIREFLY is and you want to get it happening in your area, right? to do it right you'll need some resources.
You may use any of the text and artwork on this page for brochures and posters. Please remember to let us know here @ Firefly Home Base so we can let others know of your chapter.
Some artwork...
The basic Firefly
If you don't know what this is, you need to get out at night more often :-)
This is, of course, the basic logo.
The fonts used are...
Steelwolf Medium for the word "TEAM" - Mac TrueType
Ling Print for the word "Firefly" - Mac TrueType
You will need a TrueType conversion utility to use these fonts on a PC.
Well, that's about all you need, apart from some hard work printing and posting. OK, have fun and stay in touch!
